For a bug, your phone model and Android or iOS version help a lot. Please never send us your diary content. We do not need it to help you, and we would rather not have it.
The basics
Do I need an account?
No, and most people won't want one. Mori is a complete diary with no account at all, and that is the default. An account exists for one reason: so your diary survives a lost phone and appears on a second device.
Is it free?
Yes. There is nothing to buy inside it, no subscription, and no advertising.
Does it work offline?
Entirely. The only time Mori needs a connection is a one-time download of the speech model, and later on to sync if you have an account. Writing, searching, reading and even transcription all work in airplane mode.
Privacy
Where is my diary stored?
In encrypted storage on your phone. If you sign in, an encrypted copy is also kept on our sync server so your other devices can see it. The Privacy Policy spells out exactly what that copy contains.
Can you read my diary?
Without an account there is nothing for us to read, because nothing leaves your phone. With an account, your entries sit in a database we operate, protected by per-account access rules. We do not read them, we do not train anything on them, and we never sell or share them. If you want a copy nobody but you could ever open, use the encrypted backup file.
Does Mori collect analytics?
None. No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers, no third-party SDKs of any kind.
Voice and languages
Is my voice sent anywhere to be transcribed?
No. Speech recognition runs inside the app, on your own phone. That is why it needs a one-time model download the first time you use voice, and why it works in airplane mode afterwards.
How good is transcription in my language?
English is reliable. Urdu and Roman Urdu are experimental and noticeably less accurate. We measured this rather than guessing, and we would rather say so than let you find out. Typing works perfectly in every language Mori supports. Always read a transcript before trusting it.
Why is there a download the first time I use voice?
The speech model is around 60 MB. Shipping it inside the app would make the download enormous for everyone, including people who only ever type. So Mori fetches it once, the first time you actually tap record. After that, voice works offline forever.
Does Mori change what I said?
Only by taking things away. It removes filler words and fixes spacing and line breaks, and it shows you every change so you can undo any of them. It cannot add a word you did not say, and that is enforced by how the code is built rather than promised in a policy.
Keeping it safe
How do I back up my diary?
Profile → Export & backup. You can export readable
copies as PDF, plain text or Markdown, or create a full encrypted
.mori archive that restores everything: entries, photos,
recordings and settings. Please do this from time to time even if you
sync.
I forgot my app-lock PIN.
The PIN cannot be bypassed, including by us. A lock with a universal override is not a lock, so there is deliberately no way round it.
Your diary is not lost, though, and this is worth understanding before
you panic. The PIN is a gate, not the encryption key. If you have a
.mori backup, reinstall Mori and restore it, and everything
comes back, because that passphrase is yours. If you do not have one,
reinstalling clears the lock but clears the diary with it.
If you use a fingerprint or Face ID as well as a PIN, use that instead and you are straight back in.
I forgot the passphrase to a .mori backup file.
It cannot be opened, by anyone. The passphrase never leaves your device and no copy of it exists anywhere, which is precisely what makes the archive private. There is no recovery path, so keep it somewhere you will still have next year.
Devices and reminders
Can I use Mori on two phones?
Yes, with an account. Sign in on both. One phone's diary belongs to one account, so if you sign in with a second account on a phone that already holds another account's diary, Mori stops syncing and tells you rather than mixing the two together.
Will my reminders survive a restart or a trip abroad?
Yes. Reminders are planned against the timezone you set in Mori rather than the one your phone happens to be showing, and they are rescheduled after a reboot. They arrive within a few minutes of the time you chose rather than to the second, because exact alarms are reserved by the platform for alarm and calendar apps.
How do I delete everything?
Profile → Privacy & security → Delete all entries clears the diary on this phone. To remove the cloud copy and your account, see Delete your account.
